Getting In Close

Yellow kunzea (Kunzea muellen), Snowy Mountains, NSW, Australia

Yellow Kunzea (Kunzea muellen) photographed in Australia’s Snowy Mountains using my macro lens.

A macro lens, or a set of close up lenses that fit onto the front of your standard lens, can be invaluable for close up shots of flowers and insects. I started my macro photography with a set of close up lenses and then moved up to a macro lens once I found that I liked the results of getting in close. My e-book, Starting Macro Photography, sets out how I got involved with macro shots with both close up and macro lenses. It seems to be quite popular so there must be a number of photographers out there who are finding getting in close with their cameras as fascinating as I do.

Black and White — great for stormy days

Stormy day. Long Bay, Sydney, NSW, Australia

Stormy day at Long Bay, Sydney, Australia

Even when I believe that a scene is likely to look better in black and white, I shoot in colour and than I have the option of producing a colour or monochrome image in post-processing. If you want to see how I convert colour to black and white, my e-book, Black and White Photography in the Digital Age, shows how I do it. It’s only $2-99 and can be obtained from my website in PDF format, from Smashwords and various retailers including Apple, Kobi and Barnes and Noble in formats for most tablet readers and from Amazon for Kindle readers. Repeat of the offer to buyers of Put Words with Your Pictures

As November is rapidly disappearing, I thought I had better re-post the offer I made earlier in the month to buyers of my e-book Put Words with Your Pictures. You still have time to get your copy and take advantage of the offer below.

Here is the re-post.

I hope that you are finding my new e-book inspiring you to do what the title says.

For the month of November 2013 I am offering to review a piece of your writing up to 1200 words in length, free. All you have to do is e-mail it to me at info@bigwoodpublishing.com and I will review it and e-mail you my comments. How quickly obviously depends on how many take up this offer. You do not need to send me the pictures but it would help if you gave a brief description of those that you intend to accompany the words.

I am a regularly published writer and photographer with my work published in well over fifty different publications and I have worked with authors previously one of whom wrote, “Thanks very much for the reading and correction of my text; it has taken a big load from my mind. All corrections have been effected. I have, of course, acknowledged you in the book.”

I guarantee you complete confidentiality. And, maybe it’s a little naive, all I ask is that you have bought the book to take advantage of this offer.

I am happy to answer your questions before you trust me with your work.

Black and White Digital Photography

The digital age did not kill off black and white photography just as it was not killed off when colour photography came along. The striking images of photographers like Ansel Adams could not be more stunning were they in full colour. There are times in fact when colour is not the best medium to employ in an image. As a keen former darkroom worker I am still looking out for potential images of mine that can be more attractive in black and white. Digital has just made much of the old darkroom work easier. If you are interested in turning some of your pictures into black and white prints then this e-book may be of assistance and at just $2-99 it won’t break the bank.

Cover kindle

How to convert colour images to black and white using Photoshop, how to use Photoshop’s duotone, processing a black and white image, simulate processes such as split toning, sepia toning, lith printing, and selenium toning.

Wildflower Photography

Wildflower Photography

by David Bigwood

(from his e-book Starting Nature Photography)

“Wow!” That was Margaret’s reaction as she viewed the masses of colourful blooms that were just beginning to carpet the heath above Perisher Valley in the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales that only weeks before had been covered in snow. She had only taken up photography seriously a few months previously (an ‘if I can’t stop him, I might as well join him’ decision or maybe it had something to do with me giving her an Olympus SP350 for her birthday) and before I even had my camera out of its bag she was across the road crouching among the flowers shooting like a professional.

We had come to the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales, one of my very favourite parts of Australia, in early summer. I had not previously made a habit of photographing flowers but the display in the alpine meadow beside which I had stopped the car was stunning — not as breathtaking as later in the summer perhaps but certainly stunning. And, joining the ‘if I can’t stop her, I might as well join her’ brigade, I fell into line and was soon crouching before the flowers myself engrossed in the sheer beauty of these plants that survive and flourish in the harsh environment in which they live.
